Congratulations to our Athlete of the Month: Meri Gilson! Despite keeping a busy schedule as a mom, doctor, and wife she manages to get into UCCF (sometimes while on-call!) She always shows up with a smile, no matter what kind of day she is having. Not only is Meri dedicated to her fitness, she can do the worm better than anyone we've ever seen!
Meri brings an energy to each class that brings everybody to another level . She never wines, never complains, and take every challenge thrown her way with a smile on her face. Her great energy is easily match by her willingness to learn and be coached in refining movements as well as learning new ones!
We are proud to have athletes like Meri, with her hardworking positive attitude, in our community!

A little more about Meri...
How was I introduced to CrossFit?
I heard about UCCF from Matt Shenker, one of my swimming friends. At the time I heard about it, I was nursing a pretty bad case of plantar fasciitis, and felt that something to change up my routine (of swimming and running) would be good. I also figured it would be fun to try some new form of fitness together with my at the time boyfriend, Bryan Scarpellini, so we joined together. I believe that was roughly 6 months after UCCF opened. The combination of doing it with Bryan, the community it provided, and the type of workouts had me hooked in no time!
My favorite WOD/exercise is?
My favorite WOD is typically a chipper, especially one that has some barbell weights mixed in. Preferably a lighter weight, higher rep lift.
My 3 favorite movements are?
My 3 favorite movements are overhead squats (painful, but I feel they provide great total body challenge), pull ups (now that I’ve got the kip down, next up butterfly), and any type of cleans beside squat cleans.
If i never had to do this exercise again i would be psyched:
I would be psyched if i never had to do strict press again. I have squirrelly swimmer shoulders that really hurt with this movement.
My favorite cheat meal is:
My favorite cheat meal is ICE CREAM.
My proudest CrossFit accomplishment is?
My proudest crossfit accomplishment — hmmmm, maybe doing the battle of the ages competition? it was terrifying, especially doing a lift in front of a crowd (not that they were actually watching me) but overall a fun and proud moment.
My six month goal is?
My six month goal is — not to succumb to coronavirus.
If I created a WOD and named it after myself it would be:
The Meri Gilson WOD would involve numerous movements in true chipper form :
5 rounds for time of:
2 bear crawls
4 strict pull ups
6 snatches (lightish)
8 push ups
10 OHS (lightish)
12 sit ups
14 front rack lunges
Thanks for the honor of the Athlete of the Month — though I feel completely unworthy! ;)
