Congratulations to Caryn Brake for being the Upper Cape CrossFit Athlete of the Month for June 2019!
Caryn has been a member since June 2016 and is a regular at the 3:30 PM class. When she first arrived she wanted to workout, but didn't want to "get bulky". She insisted on keeping the weight very light and moved at her own pace. As she got more comfortable, she began doing things differently. She has progressively kicked it up a notch. As one coach stated "I've seen a huge change over the last 6 months. She's driven, she's involved, and she's also definitely pushing herself. She's also loving her new ‘bulk.’ “
If you're not sure who Caryn is, you will find her located near the door of the Main Bay door with a rower and an AbMat, regardless of what the workout is. There is no down time for this lady, as she will ALWAYS use it for these two movements (but mostly sit-ups). Being recognized for this, another coach said "since she does so many sit-ups you could say she is dedicated and driven."
It has been a pleasure to work with Caryn and watch how far she has come. It is so satisfying as a coach to see the excitement in our athletes when they accomplish something. Coach Jillian said: “I will always remember her sheer excitement when she did 5 full rope climbs in a workout. She even ran over and gave me a hug!" Athletes like Caryn are why the Coach's at UCCF love what we do. Thank you, Caryn!

A little more about Caryn...
How was I introduced to CrossFit?
I taught kickbox for 12 years in East Falmouth and practiced Shaolin Kempo Karate for 5 prior to joining UCCF. My dear friends, Glen and Denise White, closed the studio so I was looking for a change. I knew a little about Crossfit and, I have to admit, it took me turning 50 to get my butt in gear and walk through that huge warehouse door. Luckily for me Josh was my fundamentals coach first day, so if you remember him, gracious and gorgeous, you'll understand that I just basically handed over my credit card. In all seriousness, I was blown away by the instant sense of camaraderie I experienced.
My favorite WOD/exercise is?
Oh, come on, duh, anything that includes abs, rowing and abs. And abs. Oh, and abs.
My 3 favorite movements are?
Even though I cheat and pull early (especially when no coach is looking): any Clean.
If I never had to do this exercise again i would be psyched:
The rope climb terrifies me, and that makes me angry...so even though I wish I never had to do it again, I will, dammit.
My favorite cheat meal is:
Hands down, KFC
My proudest CrossFit accomplishment is?
That stupid rope thing...I got 8 climbs under my belt last WOD. I may have been smiling a little after.
My six month goal is?
Oh crap, it's still a pull-up. Ugh, now I'm angry again just thinking about it.
If I created a WOD and named it after myself it would be:
MAYHEM: 100 Ab Mat Sit Ups, 1000 Meter Row, 10 Power Cleans, 10 Low Hang Cleans, 10 High Hang Cleans; 1000 Meter Row, 100 Ab Mat Sit Ups. (BOOM, Mic Drop)
