How I was introduced to CrossFit: It was Matt and Soraya Shenker that introduced me to Crossfit. I had seen how this lifestyle had made positive changes in their lives, so I tried an introductory class and have been hooked ever since.
My favorite WOD/ exercise is: Fran is a bit of a bitch, but I do like her!
If I never had to do this exercise again I would be psyched: Double Unders have been the hardest for me. I’ve seriously thought about making all of the speed ropes disappear out of the box.
My favorite cheat food/meal is: Carrot cake and anything with vodka
My proudest accomplishment is: First, it’s probably important to share with you why I’m at UCCF.
At age 30 I was diagnosed with diabetes, I immediately made some lifestyle changes and was able to control it with diet, exercise, and a little bit of oral medication. Time passed by and things got progressively worse in my late 30s and my doctor put me on insulin.
For my 40th birthday, I decided to join UCCF, a light went off during my very first challenge (Lurong). I was having days where I could skip insulin! After the challenge was over I settled back into my old ways and enjoyed myself during the holidays, immediately having to take insulin again.
My New Year's resolution was to go back to strict Paleo and also to participate in the whole30 challenge. I'm happy to say I've successfully controlled my diabetes without insulin for over a month. It's such a liberating feeling to not rely on drugs to be healthy!
My six month goal is: To run the Falmouth Road Race, I grew up in Falmouth and my family has passed out water at the second mile water station since the late 70’s. I’ve seen the look on people faces at 2 miles and it’s been a big deterrent for me to run, but I’m going to make the leap this year.
If I created a WOD and named it after myself, the workout would be called: The Devil Dog – 3 mile run, 20 pull ups, and 100 crunches. That’s the Marine Corps personal fitness test, I used to love it, but that was a few years ago..
What I love most about Upper Cape CrossFit (UCCF): You’ve both done a fantastic job finding the most talented coaches and creating a winning atmosphere. I travel a little for work and have been to a handful of other boxes. I’ve found them very different, competitive and more intimidating. You’ve done something special here, thank you!
Keith, Thank you for being a part of Upper Cape CrossFit's community! Your story is truly inspiring! Congratulations on your improved health.
